We are blessed when alums return
It is highly rewarding when alumni return and share their stories. Mahsa recently returned to update us on her activities and future plans. Mahsa had a difficult time in middle school due to constant ridicule over her weight. After transferring to other schools the ridicule continued, so her family decided to withdraw her during her 8th grade year. What a blessing it was for both her and for Willow Bend Academy! Mahsa completed middle school and all of high school in less than three years and was her class valedictorian. Upon graduation from Willow Bend Academy, she enrolled at University of Texas at Dallas and completed a bachelor’s degree, then entered graduate school at Harvard University where she is currently a clinical research assistant at Harvard Medical Center for Primary Care, Boston Childrens Hospital. She was named Innovation Programs Scholar by Harvard University in 2013 and 2014. Mahsa has recently decided to become a medical doctor and plans to enter University of Texas Southwestern Medical school in the fall of 2015. We at Willow Bend Academy are blessed to have been instrumental in her...

Sarah Lawrence College, a small Liberal Arts college in New York, has been identified as one of America’s top 100 Liberal Arts colleges by Princeton Review, Forbes, and U.S. News and World Report publications. So why would the college send a recruiter to Willow Bend Academy? Our goals for our students match very closely with those of Sarah Lawrence College. Sara Lawrence College focuses on developing these “critical abilities” in its students: To think analytically. To express ideas through writing. To exchange ideas orally. To work independently. To bring innovation to their work. To accept and act on criticism. The admissions staff of the college identified Willow Bend Academy as a high school that focuses on developing similar characteristics, and sent a recruiter from New York specifically to Willow Bend Academy. Our graduates who have shown the willingness to work diligently have been accepted to major universities such as Baylor University, Cornell University, Georgia Tech University, Louisiana State University, Ohio State University, Seaton Hall University, Southern Methodist University, Texas Christian University, Texas Tech University, University of Arkansas, University of Mississippi, University of North Texas, University of Oklahoma and University of Texas (Arlington, Austin and Dallas). Other students have specific interests that are better developed at smaller colleges such as Belmont University (Tennessee), Berkeley School of Music (California), Bethany College (Kansas), Dallas Baptist University, Ouachita Baptist University (Arkansas), Schreiner University (Fredericksburg, TX), and Toccoa Falls University (Georgia). Still others have chosen local schools such as Brookhaven College, Collin College, Dallas Christian College, Remington College, and Richland College while others have chosen military service or entered the workforce. Whether students choose major universities, smaller colleges, technical schools or the workforce, their future success is enhanced by Willow Bend Academy as we direct our students to “Master Learning, Master Life.” ...

Congratulations to Michael “Corwin” Getty for being recognized as a Commended Student in the National Merit Scholarship program. Over 1,500,000 students completed the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude (PSAT) test in 2013. Michael’s score is one of the top 34,000. We at Willow Bend Academy would love to take some of the credit for his accomplishment (he has been a student at Willow Bend Academy since middle school), but the bottom line is “He did it!” by committing to dedicate the time and effort to gain the most from the opportunities presented to him at school. We look forward to his future accomplishments and his contributions to our...

Q: Why are we required to spend so much energy writing?

Extracurricular with Callie
Callie is a freshman at our Lewisville campus. She is active in her theatre, The Actors Conservatory Theater. Her most recent full production was with Narnia, where she worked backstage. She works side by side with the stage managers prior to the shows preparing sets and props, as well as making adjustments needed to assist the actors as they move on and off the stage between acts. In an effort to make a show run as smoothly as possible, Callie learns each stage hand’s role as well as any cues, so if someone is absent, she can step in and assist. A famous saying in theatre is, “the show must go on.” That is true whether an actor/actress or someone on the crew is out. Currently, Callie is working backstage with The ACT in their touring show of Flat Stanley. This show will not only perform at the community theatre, but will also tour for three days to local Lewisville ISD elementary schools. Callie works not only off stage, but often performs on stage as well. She loves the performance aspect of theatre as much as the tech side. She is looking at many art colleges and hopes to get a scholarship to pursue her dream as a...
