High School Program (Grades 9-12)
Our high school program is designed to prepare students for “life after high school”. For many, the goal is to be prepared for college or university. For others, it means to be prepared for entry into occupational training through community colleges or military service. Still for others, it means being prepared to enter the workforce.
You will find that classes at Willow Bend Academy differ from those of most other schools in a number of ways. First, each student works at his or her own pace at an individual workstation rather than sitting in a “lecture-style” classroom. There is no teacher in front of the class giving lectures. Students get to work one-on-one with their teacher for a large part of the day. Rather than having 22-25 classmates, you will have a maximum of 8 students in your individual group-although there will be ample opportunity to mix with students from other groups. This helps to reduce the level of distraction from other things going on in the room. On a given day, most students will spend at least 20 – 25 minutes in face-to-face dialog with their teacher. This allows our teachers to be much more aware of the needs and progress of each student, and to be more available for questions and assistance. Finally, students attend on-campus for four hours each weekday rather than the traditional six or seven. This works because we concentrate on academics and not things like band, athletics, and other “non-academic” elective courses. While these are important activities, we believe they can be accomplished off campus.
Several of our students actively participate in off campus programs ranging from athletic programs to ballet and performing arts.
Our four-hour school day also allows flexibility for students to attend college classes during their high school years for both high school and college credits. Students may either enroll in the morning class from 8:15 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. or in the afternoon class from 1:00 – 5:00 p.m.
Students in the morning class also have the option to attend Homework Hangout from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m.
